Mutant Chronicles

Name: Mutant Chronicles
Length: 1 hour 45 Mins
Starring:  John Malkovich, Devon Aoki, Thomas Jane, Sean Pertwee, Ron Perlman
Part of a series? No
My rating: 4/5
Why I would or would not recommend it: It has an excellent cast and obviously draws it's inspiration from many classic film origins, it's an independent film and so the effects aren't quite as big budget as a lot of Hollywood films. I quite like that feel though. It's a mixture of medieval steampunk film noir with a bunch of zombie mutants thrown in for good measure. If this is your thing, watch it; if it's not, then don't. I enjoyed it.

The storyline: Loosely based on the RPG, the story is set 700 years into the future - the year 2707 to be precise, where nearly everything is powered by steam, the Earth’s natural resources have been exhausted by mankind and battle rages between the soldiers of four leading Corporations: the Capitol, Bauhaus, Mishima and Imperial.

Mitch Hunter and Nathan Rooker, a pair of battle-hardened Capitol soldiers, are leading an attack on a Bauhaus outfit when an explosion rips a hole in an ancient seal awakening a horrifying machine that recycles human corpses creating powerful and relentless mutants. Mitch manages to escape but he has to witness the savage death of his friend Nathan who is torn apart by mutants armed with heavy bladed arms.

As the mutants multiply by their millions destroying all before them, the last humans attempt to evacuate the planet. The Corporations’ leader, a high priest figure called Constantine, is about to abandon the planet and leave the remaining humans to their desperate fate when he is approached by one of the Elders, a monk named Samuel. Brother Samuel is keeper of the Chronicles, an old tome, which foretold the rise of the Mutants and that a ‘Deliverer’ will appear to destroy the Machine and save mankind. Samuel believes he is the Deliverer and he manages to recruit Mitch Hunter to help him in his quest to destroy the Machine. Mitch reluctantly signs up, along with a handful of like-minded soldiers including Steiner, a Bauhaus leader and sworn enemy of Mitch; sword-wielding Severian and Latino street fighter El Jesus; fearless beauty Duval and her brother Juba.

The “Mutant Chronicles” follows Mitch and Samuel’s mission to venture into the very heart of the machine in an attempt save the planet from the marauding hordes of undead.

The Hunt for the Meteor by Jules Verne

Name:The Hunt for The Meteor
Author:Jules Verne
Publisher: Arco Publications 1965
Pages: 191
Part of a series? N
My rating: ****
Why I would or would not recommend it:
Published posthumously this novel is highly enjoyable.
It tells the tale of two amateur astronomers who both discover a new meteor at the same time. Previously friends (their son and daughter are to be married) they fall out over who has discovered the meteor first.
Add in the fact that the meteor is discovered to be made of pure gold, that it's falling to earth, and there is arguing over who it belongs to, where it will fall, etc. and you've got a highly amusing story about science, rivalry, greed and human nature!

Jeremiah (TV show)

Jeremiah - Letters From the Other Side Parts 1 & 2

See here for a short official review. Jeremiah, Markus and Erin are captured and taken to theValhalla compound. Kurdy, on his way to try to rescue them, meets Mr. Smith who has a message from God. Lee Chen then captures him and convinces him to help with a dangerous plan to rescue the 4. It risks contaminating the wourd with the Big Death again. Jeremiah finds his father after 15 years

My thoughts: Even though this is the first time I've ever seen this show, it was fairly easy to figure out what was going on. I enjoyed the show and hope to see more episodes.

The Host by Stephenie Meyer

I just finished reading this long book and must say that I really liked it! Science Fiction meets Romance without all the mushy details. Well there was some mush but it was bearable. In this story the earth has been taken over by beings that call themselves Souls. They are your standard Scifi parasite that takes over the human host and continue on with a human life with the Soul in control. The Soul Wanderer is placed in Melanie's body but finds that she can't suppress and do away with Melanie. They coexist in Melanie's body and soon Wanderer finds herself caring for the people and things Melanie cared for.My thoughts: Throughout this book the Soul Wanderer claimed that Souls were kind, would never hurt anyone. However this view doesn't go with the fact that they took over a whol planet of people and effectively murdered them. This was never addressed.

The X Files: I Want to Believe

Name: The X Files - I Want to Believe

Rated: PG 13

Length: 1 hour and 44 mts

Starring: David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson, Amanda Peet, Billy Connolly, Alvin "Xibitz" Joiner

My rating: Being a die hard X-Phile, I wouldn't have missed it at all.

Why I would or would not recommend it: I would recommend this to any one who liked thriller/mystery type movies. It is a stand alone movie so even if you didn't watch the TV show you can still enjoy this.

We went to see this tonight and it was great, I really enjoyed it! I can't say much without being a spoiler. I was a little disappointed that Mulder's alien invasion conspiracy story line wasn't addressed, however the story here was sufficiently creepy to keep my interest.

A Rough Guide to Sci-Fi Movies by John Scalzi

A Rough Guide to Sci-Fi Movies by John Scalzi

A good introduction to Sci-Fi movies.

The guide begins with the origins of science fiction discussing Plato, Thomas Moore, and leading up to Jules Verne and HG Wells.
Then there are sections on different decades of Sci-fi films, Top 50 sci-fi movies, Icons of sci-fi movies, science, Locations, Global sci-fi, TV series, etc.

Recommended as a good basic reference book
